In 2023, Lid I-5 North worked with a University of Washington Master’s Studio led by Professor Nancy Rottle to study the site context, global lid case studies, and initial designs for a lid. The Studio’s work can be viewed here.

U District Partnership awarded $1.5MM Grant to explore lidding i-5

For over half a century, the neighborhoods of Wallingford, the U District, Ravenna, and Roosevelt have all been bifurcated and separated by major federal highway infrastructure. The Lid I-5 North feasibility study will look at ways to re-knit these communities together.

Community Forum Talks About Lidding I-5 to bridge THE gap between u-district and wallingford

A community vision workshop with over 100 participants was hosted in November 2023 by the U District Partnership, the Lid I-5 campaign, and the UW Scan Design Master Studio to build a constituency for lidding Interstate 5 in North Seattle.

Lid I-5 North Hosts U District Community Vision Workshop

People of all walks of life turned up to share their ideas for a community vision workshop focused on lidding Interstate 5 between NE 45th and NE 50th Streets. With about 13 acres of land that could be created by the project, the opportunities are significant.

Housing and parks could be built over I-5. Seattle councilmembers officially into it

Last year, Seattle City Council approved a resolution supporting the idea to construct a lid over I-5. The resolution is meant to place the I-5 lid project into consideration as officials develop a new comprehensive plan, budgets, and other goals.

Lid I-5 is a grassroots organization focused on building highway lids across downtown Seattle. The organization currently focuses its efforts on a lid in the downtown Seattle core, and supports additional efforts in South Park and North Seattle. Lid I-5 is a strong partner in Lid I-5 North’s efforts. Their website includes information about highway lids in Seattle and across the country.
